Permits Needed To Start A Restaurant Business

When you open a restaurant business, there are many permits and licenses you will be required to have. The type of business license you will need will be different in each city, county, and state. There are some who require each business to register yearly, and they collect a fee from each registration. There are others that do not require a business to register if the business is not incorporated, unless you will be operating under an assumed or fictitious name.


To learn what type of licenses and permits you will need for the area your business will be located in, you need to talk to your county or city clerk. You will also want to check out the zoning ordinances and sign regulations that may apply to the type and location of your business.

Before you even think about obtaining licenses and permits, you will need to apply for a Federal Employer Identification Number or EIN. You can do this by visiting the IRS website. They will ask a few questions and you will be issued an EIN. This number identifies you to the government (IRS) as a business owner. Everyone who owns a business must have an EIN.

Below are some of the licenses and permits that you may need for your restaurant business.

1. A License for Business- Depending on your restaurant business location, you may be charged a percentage of your gross sales, or a simple yearly fee to operate your business.

2. A Food Handler's License or Permit- This is necessary for the selling of edible goods. Each state and county have their own set of rules and amount of fee charged. You will be inspected regularly by health inspectors to make sure you are running a clean restaurant business.

3. A Liquor License- having a liquor license will allow you to sell alcohol. It is essential to have one if you plan on selling any alcohol in your restaurant business. The type of license you apply for will depend on what sort of alcohol your restaurant will serve. Many states will require that you obtain a one license for beer, another for wine, and yet another for hard liquor. The state only allows a certain number of liquor licenses for an area. If none are available you, you will need to purchase the license from someone who already has one and is willing to sell. These can be renewed yearly, unless you have committed an illegal offense such as, selling liquor to a minor, or selling liquor you do not have a license for.

4. A Sign Permit- Before you put up any signs for your restaurant business, contact your city officials to see if there are restrictions on the type of sign, size, location, and how the sign is lit. You should also get written approval from your landlord before you put up any sort of sign.

5. A Music License- Any establishment that plays copyrighted music, will need one of these. Whether you have a band, DJ playing CDs, or Karaoke. The fines can be steep for not having a music license. They usually run from ,000 to ,000, so it's a good idea to obtain this license.

6. Fire Certificates- You will undoubtedly be inspected by the fire department before you open your restaurant business. They will educate you on all regulations you will need to follow, and will do routine inspections on your business.
Other permits you may need include: a Police Permit, a Sellers Permit (allows you to buy wholesale goods without paying sales tax), and a Building or Zoning Permit.

The laws and regulations of any area are subject to change, it will be important to join your local and National Restaurant Association. Keep informed on the changes in local government also.

A good business slogan should do more than simply say a little more about your business or entice people to come by your store. A good business slogan should motivate customers to engage in your product or service. Business Slogans motivate customers and positions your business.

A business slogan is the ribbon that ties the package and holds it all together. Just as there are many types of businesses there are also many types of slogans. Here are few to choose from when forming your business slogans.

1. Business Slogans-A Unique Perspective - one of the things you want your business slogan to do is show how you are different from your competitors. By using the catch phrase to illustrate how unique or special your particular business is you can attract people to your company. A slogan that says "Rare books and home treasures" might draw people to a bookstore because they believe there are books there that you cannot find any place else. That keeps them from running to the local Barnes and Noble's because they believe they can find something special at your shop. Uniqueness is a great motivator in our cookie-cutter business climate.

2. Business Slogans- An Advantage - a major question we ask all the time is, "what's in it for me?" A slogan that can show how using your business above others will be a benefit or bring and advantage to your customers is a great way to bring their attention toward you. In our competitive world-view, everyone wants to think they have and edge over others. A business slogan that shows people you can help them faster, farther or with more specific care will swing public opinion to your side. A taxi company whose slogan is "We get there first!" has a great advantage because people are always in a hurry. Business slogans that provide advantage make a logical argument for your cause.

3. Business Slogans- An Inquiry - human beings love to interact and be part of a specific idea or train of thought. If you want to know people better, you should ask them questions. A business slogan phrased as an inquiry can encourage people to engage your business because they take the question into themselves and in answering it, discover they are interested in what you are marketing. If you ran a dry cleaning business and wanted people to be coming involved with your store you might have a slogan like "Would you want your wear to get the best care?" People seeing the slogan would automatically say to themselves "Yes, I would like my clothes to get good care" - then they assume that your cleaners have offer that service. Question business slogans must be set up in a way to solicit a positive answer, but they serve businesses well when it comes to customer buy in.

4. Business Slogans- A Goal - From the earliest scientific experiments of rats in mazes to constant venues of social psychology, human beings have shown repeatedly that we engage in goal setting behavior. A business slogan that sets a goal gives people something to work toward in a structured and well organized fashion. What they don't realize is the pursuit of their goal will bring them in direct contact with you. For example, and internet market company is trying to find new clients to use its services. Under its name the slogan is "Your name in every mail box". For people trying to sell something online, that would be an outstanding goal to achieve. They would certainly investigate that company to see if it can help them reach their goals.

5. Business Slogans- A Smile - Humor is a good approach (unless you have a serious business, like a hospital or funeral home - no one wants a funny doctor). Making people smile and feel good gives them the idea that your company can also provide the same level of comfort and ease. A pun on words or interesting rhyme may be just the thing to keep people running in your direction. A local donut company's slogan "A hole lot of goodness" has kept them in business for years simply because it makes people smile - and that's what donuts are supposed to do.

Creating a business slogan requires a professional ability to analyze which motivating factor would best suit your business. With the right business slogan, your business message will break through the clutter and motivate prospects to engage with your business.

What is Networking and Why is it Important in Business?

When I began my networking journey, I attended any and all networking events as time permitted. Every event was fair game! Today I am much more strategic in my networking endeavors. I discovered which events and organizations gave me the best return on my investment of time as well as how to be an effective, caring networker.

In order to know where to begin you must first understand what networking is and why it is important to grow your business. Networking in its purest form is simply talking to people, making connections and developing rapport to grow our circle of influence. Business networking is essentially the same except that our primary objective in business networking is to help us grow our businesses. For most of us, building a network means meeting people we can do business with or who will do business with us, or refer people who will do business with us, are our ultimate goals.

In fact, some of the best networks are those created by people who own and run their own businesses. When you create valuable networking relationships, you build them on a foundation of mutual trust, sharing knowledge, experiences and resources to help one another grow your businesses by either referring one another or doing business directly with one another.

What is Networking and Why is it Important in Business?

It works like this: If you do a good job, one customer might tell three to five of her colleagues, family and friends about you. Whereas, when you build a network of say 10 to 20 strong advocates, they may each tell only one person about your, however your "exposure" is now more than doubled - With the right network, the ultimate in "word of mouth" marketing takes place. You promote your network, and your network promotes you.

Have you ever attended a BNI or Le Tip or other form of structured networking groups? Perhaps you are already a member of a similar group. If not, you might consider becoming involved in one to the fastest growing business networking concepts around. These groups invite business professionals to join on an exclusive basis. That means, that if you are a chiropractor and become a member of one of these groups, no other chiropractor will be invited or allowed to join.

These groups have regularly scheduled meetings (anywhere from monthly to weekly) with a list of rules and objectives to which you must abide. In some cases, a minimum number of referrals is required to participate. In others, simply doing business with one or more in the network is all that is asked of he members. However, keep in mind that for this type of networking to be worthwhile for all parties, each must make every effort to do business with other members of the group.

If this form of structured networking isn't for you, there are other options for finding potential networking venues and partners. Here are some ideas to help you on your way to networking success.

a. Develop a joiners mentality. By that I mean, don't just sign up to get our name on a roster. REALLY JOIN. Get involved. Participate in discussions, events and BE VISIBLE. The saying "out of sight, is out of mind," holds true when it comes to networking. I have been involved in groups and decided to take a hiatus from attending for 2 to 3 months (and sometimes more) only to have people come up to me and tell me they forgot the name of my business so they had to find someone else either through a friend or through the local phone book. BUMMER!

b. Attend networking functions. These can include Chambers of Commerce meetings, after hours socials, ad hoc committees and special events task forces.

c. Get involved in a community service group such as Kiwanis, Lions, Jaycees, etc.

d. Volunteer with a non-profit organization, whose mission you are passionate about and believe in. People who have similar passions will want to do business with you.

e. Host events - I started an event called Goddess Gatherings more than 2 years ago in my home. It is an intimate gathering of women (8 max.) who share a common interest and/or wish to expand their own circles. I invite women who do not yet know one another although they may be familiar with their names. These women are women in my circle of influence either directly or indirectly (they are either members of the 22 groups I belong to and attend regularly or they are part of a circle within these groups). I might invite a "surprise" guest who can entertain the women - such as a masseuse or tarot card reader- or feature a business such as a jeweler or make-up artist. This helps make for a memorable evening and the women either start their own Gathering or look forward to being invited to another gathering hosted by either myself of one of the women in attendance.

f. Look for ways to cross-promote with businesses that complement yours. For instance, a spa might join with a health food store or restaurant and promote their products and services for staying healthy. A salon might join a florist to promote weddings or proms and a realtor might join with a mortgage broker to promote a "one-stop" experience for home buyers.

g. Interview others. A great way for me to network is to interview women for projects I am working on. Since most people are flattered when you ask their opinion about something or experiences in life, this has been a great means of increasing my own circle for various reasons. I might interview a woman (or even a man) about an article or book I am writing, or a seminar I am developing. People love to share their stories. I tape the interview (with their permission, of course) and give them a copy afterwards. It helps to have a list of questions ready prior to the interview, however, unless they insist, I don't give them the questions ahead of time. I have done these interviews via phone, email as well as in person. Many of the women have since.

h. Join an online business or social networking community such as MeetUp, Ryze, Max-in-Common, Linkd In, Open BC, to name a few,. These groups have subgroups made up of people with a specific focus and similar interests. Or you can join a non-specific group to gain more knowledge, exposure and contacts.

Make a point of attending one new networking event a month just to "check it out." Make a list of the people you know, the organizations you have heard and read about and the companies who currently do business with you. These are all great resources to tap into to find new venues to network. Get the local newspaper and look at the organizations and businesses hosting events to which the public is invited. Attend them.

The best networking begins with planning and taking action. Being strategic in your planning is important to your ultimate success as an effective, caring networker.

Gray Area Tax Deductions: If Your Business Needs It - Why Is It A Gray Area Deduction?

This week, I've been inundated with clients asking about Gray Area Tax Deductions. What?

It appears my local competitor has determined that certain business deductions are "gray area" and won't risk a red flag from IRS to take the deductions. And I'm still sitting back asking myself what-the-heck?

If you need to make a purchase for your business, it's an authentic need, you purchased the item, you are using the item, and you have a receipt - how is it a "gray area deduction"?

Some of these so called, gray area deductions were listed as:

Calculators (because the client has a computer)Daytimer (because the client could use the computer)Coffee Grinder (ground coffee is cheaper)Television (used for training videos in the office - considered 'entertainment')Business Cards (because client changed addresses and needed to replace them)Communications Networks (because they're 'excessive')Digital Cameras (because they can be used for personal use)

If the item on your list is used for your business, and is required for you to conduct business, it is deductible. For instance, the coffee grinder - while it probably isn't necessary for my business to have a coffee grinder, I personally don't drink much coffee (rarely if ever, if I don't have clients). My clients often bring gifts of coffee beans, in small packets, as a Thank You for my services (I'm not sure where the custom came from, but it's sweet). When they come for more services, I take a handful of coffee beans, grind them up, make a pot of coffee, and serve it while we do their business. It isn't a big thing, and I could probably live without the deduction, but it is a business expense.

My tax client who asked about her coffee grinder, operates a very small, but lucrative Bed and Breakfast in my hometown. Of course she serves fresh ground coffee to high end visitors in her Bed and Breakfast, so of course, the coffee grinder is deductible. Ground coffee may indeed be cheaper, but since when did IRS have a bounty on high end expenditures? IF that were the case, would there not be more Executives traveling coach?

Next time you need a piece of equipment and you have good reason to purchase it for business, remember... It's Deductible!

Does Finally Fast Work? - Finally Fast PC Cleaner Product Review

When you turn your computer on do you notice it taking longer and longer to boot up every time? Is it also taking longer and longer to open files and browse the web? If so you probably have a large amount of registry errors, "junk files," and spyware. If this is you, then you have probably seen the commercials for the Finally Fast PC Cleaner and are wondering "does finally fast work?" The answer to that question lies ahead, with a bit of other information that might interest you, including a way to keep some money in your pocket.

The short answer is yes, Finally Fast does a pretty good job of clearing your computer of nasty adware files, spyware files, and revamping your computer's registry. That's the good news. The bad news is that after the free scan that they offer you on the site, the scan tells you that you need to buy several of their products to completely clear your computer of all of its problems. While doing this will eventually make your computer run quite a bit more efficiently, you are going to end up spending hundreds on Finally Fast when you could be spending less than the price of a nice night out for the same service.

Don't get me wrong here. Finally fast is a very quality product and if you like to pay for big ticket items, then go right ahead, but my advice would be to explore your options thoroughly before making the decision to pay half of what your computer is worth to "fix" it. There are some amazing freelance developers that make their living online by setting up ful service programs that do the exact same thing as Finally Fast, and they do it all in one package.

To understand why this market is as it is, you must understand the basic idea behind these products. See, what they do is scour your computer for certain types of files that are very easily found by an experienced developer, and it simply fixes them by either rewriting them or deleting them. Finally Fast is selling you the exact same product as the other companies, but at a much higher price and all broken up into different products by just separating what each program finds.

They also claim to have found a way to optimizing your Internet connection. The fact is that if you have dial up, all of the speed boosts in the world won't help you. If you have DSL or cable, your internet connection expensive enough already, and isn't worth spending even more on for a minuscule gain. Lastly, Finally Fast claims to have developed programs that will do things that Windows already does, but do them better. Guess what? Not worth it. This is nothing that can't be fixed by a more cost-effective product.

So to answer your question Does Finally Fast Work? Yes it does, but you are going to end up paying 10x what you should. If you want the same benefit as Finally Fast at 1/10 of the cost I suggest you check out some more moderately priced versions of the same product.
